Wet Yami Version 2

Hello there everyone ^_^

How are you? Are you doing well? I sure hope that you are. Well, what can I say about my latest deviation.... Hmm... The image itself I suppose is rather straight forward....

I guess that it's safe to start off by saying that Yami Yugi/Atemu/Atem from Yu-Gi-Oh is still one of my absolute, all time favorite male anime/manga characters ever. But then again, that's rather evident, given the number of fan art paintings that I've done dedicated to this series. I could never quite put my finger on it though... There's just always been something so alluring about the character. I don't know if it's his unique look, or his enigma, his ancient past, or perhaps wanting to know more about the character as a whole, (though I must admit that desire was never quite fulfilled....). But whatever it was, it's been enough to hold my interest for several years now it seems. Still, I must also admit that at times I was a bit dissatisifed with the way that Yami Yugi/Atemu was depicted in the anime, given the number of rotating animation teams and styles that shifted again and again throughout the long running anime. And even at his best, there were times that I wished that the character would be depicted with a more mature look to him, despite him being the age of 16 at his death. Maybe I thought that he should appear this way due to his deeper voice in both the English and the Japanese version. Or perhaps it had to do with the fact that he was a timeless spirit, not restricted to the short life span that he had had thousands of years ago. Author’s Note (April 2010):  Wow...  It’s hard to believe that I started this fan-fiction almost 6 years ago.  So much time has passed, and yet at the same time it feels as if it were only yesterday since I created this work.  Even though I put it away for a while, as I focused on other things in my life, my love for this story never faltered.  And I’m quite sure that it will always be special to me, no matter what... 
     In recent months, I found myself rediscovering the intensity of the love that I felt for the Yu-Gi-Oh anime and manga series, and as a result I was compelled to revisit this fan-fiction, rework it, and maybe even attempt to complete it this time around!  It’ll be a daunting task, especially given the extent of what I would like to rewrite before I continue onward, and because despite everything that I had written previously, I had barely even begun

I have simply created my own "version" of Yami that is a bit more preferable to me. ^_^; In my mind, the character IS a bit older and physically more mature, in addition to being more layered and complex than the bits of him seen in the anime and manga, even when his past was briefly addressed. So in short, I suppose this image is simply my attempt at depicting him how I would see him in my imagination and how I would have liked to have seen him in the actual series.

I must note as well that this image is a sort of illustration for a scene that I have long since yet to write for my fanfiction too. I imagined a rather playful scene between Yami and and my Teana where she eventually doses him with water thus resulting in his hair flattening a bit like "real" wet hair, opposed to his common upward hair style. I actually attempted to draw this once before as seen in a older deviation:

But I wasn't quite satisfied with the overall result, despite my thinking that it was a good concept image for how I wanted his hair to look while wet, at least.

So in my new image, I wanted him t look very sexy, lying on his sheets and pillows in his bed chamber. Though I know that historically speaking, there didn't seem to be any pillows in Ancient Egypt, I thought that I would use the design of Yami/Atemu's bed room used in the anime, where he did indeed have green sheets and pillows. However, above his head, there was a carving of some sort similar to the eye on the Millennium Puzzle. Yet, since I wanted the wall above him to be e bit more decorative, I thought that I would go for a more decorative carving, as seen in some books that I have with real ancient Egyptian carvings and hieroglyphics.

Though Yami is still a bit wet from Teana's dosing, he is not completely soaked so as only his upper body and hair is dripping a bit. I didn't think it would be enough to completely soak the sheets, but rather have them sprinkled with water as seen by the few drops still resting on the sheets and pillows and the stains of the drops that have already soaked through. I also imagined that Yami/Atemu had just plopped himself on the bed moments before, as if playful daring Teana to come to him. I attempted to capture that in his expression too. ^_^

As always this piece was painted using opague water color.
