Miyu and Larva Sketch

Hello everyone ^^

Hmm.... where to start.... I can't help but wonder how many will be familar with the characters within this drawing but ah well.... I'm revisiting an old favorite right now so I couldn't help myself with this one.

I'll be sure to write more when I finish the actual painting but I thought I'd post the original sketch too....

Here I have my rendition of Vampire Princess Miyu (from the manga/anime of the same name) and her "servant" and protector, (a demon of some sort called a "Shinma")named Larva.

As stated previously, this title is much older; perhaps there are even some who have never heard of it, but for me it was one of the first anime titles that I watched back in the mid 90s.

What can I even say about it? Well, for starters, there were two separate series for it. A four part OAV that was made in the late 80s and a 26 episode tv series which aired in the late 90s.

Personally I MUCH prefferred the OAV rather than the tv series which, in my opinion, lacked much of the drama and character development of the original OAV or the manga. In addition to that, origins were completely changed and each episode had a "monster of the day" formula that I didn't care for at all.

But the series itself, and especially the original manga, was full of emotion, and passion, and with its beautiful art work, (art that I still think is very beautiful) I couldn't help but be captivated by it.

Evident by my image, I'm sure, I especially loved the bond between the title character Miyu and Larva. Though their relationship could be open to interpretation for some, it was most certainly an intimate one, which I'll say more about later.

One thing that I wanted to clarify about the actual image, however, which I'll re-emphasize when I post the final is that I do NOT take credit for the border. Yes I DID draw it myself in my image above, but it is based on the existing border used for the covers of the original OAVs. I liked it so much that I wanted to include it in my image, though I adjusted it a bit to frame my version of Miyu and Larva, and I made some slight changes here and there as well. Additionally, I was not going for perfection either in terms of rendering it. I'll certainly try to paint it as closely as I can to the real border, but like the characters, it will simply be my interpretation.

I'll leave it at that for now, but once more I will say that for a series that's more than 20 years old now, it still packs a punch in my book! ^_^ <Sigh>......
